Tips for Running as a Beginner

Running is a beneficial exercise that positively impacts your physical and mental health, and with spring weather coming it’s a great time to get outside and get started. Even those new to physical workouts can start out with running, due to its basic form and simple equipment. Running is a great place to start on your journey of activity and there are some basics that can increase enjoyment while also making training more safe and effective.

The advantages of running greatly outweigh the intimidation many feel when first starting. There are a slew of health benefits but also mental benefits, as running can be a stress reliever. Running is a great way to begin a weight loss journey but also can increase your metabolism and energy. You don’t need a lot of expensive equipment to start running, as you can run almost anywhere. Some runners prefer trails and roads whereas some prefer tracks or treadmills. There are pros and cons to different variations of running, it’s important to do research and find what will work best for you. As far as equipment is concerned, you really just need shoes. There are a variety of shoes that can accommodate your style of running. Choosing the correct shoe can reduce your risk of injury and also make running more enjoyable for you.

Running may seem like it is relatively safe, however there are some precautions to take into account in order to reduce your risk of injury. If you are a road or trail runner always keep an eye on your surroundings. Look out for bikes or cars while running on the road and if you’re running on a hiking track look out for rocks, logs, or creeks. Another safety consideration is stretching. Running can be tough on your joints so stretching before you train is a really good way to reduce your risk of tears or injury. When starting a new running routine, a great way to make sure that you’re not over exerting yourself is to start out small. A running routine should be challenging, however it shouldn’t be so hard that you never want to run again. Start out slow and as you build endurance you can build on your running routine!

The main thing when it comes to running is: just start. Starting a new physical activity can be intimidating but you can alter your running routine to fit your ability and needs.
